South Africa expects to harvest over 300,000 tons of grapes

10 September 2018 –

South Africa’s table grape production this season will beat the record level of the 2016/2017 campaign. (67 million boxes of 4.5 kg, or 301.5 thousand tons) and will reach 70 million boxes, or 315,000 tons.
“Given the acreage devoted to vineyards and the high yield, the South African industry expects to harvest 70 million boxes (315,000 tons) and even more. The positive forecast is related to the entry into production of new vineyards and new varieties. As a result, the production of table grapes may return to a positive growth curve,” SATI said.
It is noted that record volumes were achieved last season thanks to precipitation in the winter, which mitigated the impact of drought in the Western Cape. SATI’s first accurate estimate of the table grape harvest will be published in the second half of October.
