MPO calls on consumers to support local dairy industry

The Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) has called on consumers to use South African dairy products instead of imported goods, following the appearance of low-priced and sub-standard imported dairy products on retailers’ shelves.

Subsidies abroad may enable producers there to sell their products at lower prices in other countries, which is against international guidelines. These imports have been reported to the authorities and relevant action can be expected.

Imports of this nature are very costly to the dairy industry and lead to unemployment which has an effect on the general health of the economy and eventually impacts on the consumer. In time it may also affect South African food security. “The vast variety and affordable prices at which South African dairy products are available, means it is not necessary to buy imported products,” Mr Bertus de Jongh, chief executive officer of the MPO, said.

Information indicated that consumers rarely enjoy the benefit of low-priced imported products which are, in many instances, sold at the same price as local products. Very often the standard of the imported products does not meet South African requirements.

“We request consumers to support the local dairy industry by not buying imported dairy products,” Mr de Jongh concluded.
