PERSVERKLARING UITGEREIK DEUR BERTUS DE JONGH,

HOOFUITVOERENDE BEAMPTE VAN DIE MELKPRODUSENTE-ORGANISASIE

Melkprodusente-organisasie gryp in

MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY BERTUS DE JONGH,

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE MILK PRODUCERS’ ORGANISATION

Milk Producers' Organisation intervenes

A contingent of concerned farmers and representatives of the MPO, SAMELKO and SSK led by Bertus de Jongh, managing director of the MPO, in collaboration with Prof. Mohammed Karaan, dean of the faculty Agricultural Sciences at the University of Stellenbosch, assessed the current situation of dairy farmers in the greater Overberg region at a strategic planning session last weekend. They analysed environmental factors that led to current economic trends to find possible solutions for the current situation of dairy farmers in the region. In addition, the group also assessed  micro factors that led to the poor bargaining power of producers.

During the planning session, it was decided to investigate current transport routes, the possibility of a management mechanism in respect of milk supply, additional processing capacity in consultation with producers and partnerships with existing processors and processing plants.

Several members of the group were tasked to provide feedback regarding progress during a follow-up meeting which will take place soonest.

For further information, contact Bertus de Jongh at 082 552 0594.
