Agricultural Business Chamber welcomes appointments of new Ministers for Agriculture

"The Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) welcomes the appointments of Ms Tina Joemat-Peterson and Dr Pieter Mulder as respectively Minister and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, by President Jacob Zuma, and heartily congratulates them on their appointments. The Agricultural Business Chamber looks forward to working closely and constructively with the respective ministers to the benefit of agriculture and all the people of South Africa", says Mr Corwyn Botha, Chairman of the ABC.

Agriculture and food have become major issues on the global agenda, with food security and sustainability considerations dominating debates worldwide. Given concerns around South Africa's own food security, and also South Africa's critical position in providing food security on a regional basis in Africa, the challenges facing the Ministers are daunting, but with good planning, good cooperation between the private and public sector, and with good execution from all concerned, the sector as a whole can deliver on the expectations of society.

"We have a Strategic Plan for South African Agriculture, basically agreed to by all stakeholders in the sector, and we have sound structures and institutions to support agriculture and place it on a high growth path, to the benefit of all in South Africa. But we need to work together and cooperate in order to harness the innovation, energy and skills of our people to achieve a high growth scenario. The ABC also looks forward to working closely with Minister Rob Davies and the two respective Deputy Ministers of Trade and Industry, as well as with Minister Gugile Nkwinti and Deputy Minister Dr Joe Phaahla of the Ministry of Rural Development and Land Reform. Our congratulations and good wishes accompany them on the challenging road they now embark on", Mr Botha said today.
