National Yearling Sale 2010
Good things come from the Valley of Ceres
LOT 375, a Jet Master colt from the top broodmare Mystic Spring is a potential sales topper at the Emperors National Yearling Sale to be held on Friday 23, Sunday 25 and Monday 26 April. Unnamed as yet, he was bred by Cheveley Stud and is the last lot that will pass through the ring during the Sunday session.
Vaughan Koster of Cheveley comments: “We’re obviously very excited about this colt. He’s really nice, a typical Jet Master, big and athletic. He’s bay, not grey like his half-brother Rabiya and his half-sister Secret Of Victoria, but carries the same quality.”
Koster also likes an imported filly from the first crop of Group 1 winning sprinter Nadeem, himself by champion sire Redoute’s Choice. Her name is Dubai Fairy (Lot 133), and she’ll be up for sale early on Sunday.
At Lammerskraal Stud, owner Mike Rattray and stud manager Sally Jordaan share high hopes for a Western Winter colt from the US-bred mare, Big Mona. He was named Big Winter Chill (Lot 48) and Jordaan tells: “He is truly smashing and I actually said to Mr Rattray we must keep him and race him ourselves. But somewhere out there is a buyer who will get lucky!”
Another Western Winter offspring is Lot 53, a colt River Blythe, the first foal of Rakeen’s daughter Blythe Spirit from a female line stacked with Graded performers including Fine Feather, Historic Lady and Badge Of Honour.
The bay filly Icywinterstorm (Lot 246) is the third produce of former Equus Award-winning star Icy Air. Jordaan comments: “Icy Air’s first foal by Rakeen is a winner from six starts and the second one is unraced as yet. Icy Air has every chance still to produce a star like herself.”
Lammerskraal ‘s Ceres neighbours Daytona Stud has a small consignment of three colts. The Stud’s Mike Barnard points out: “We have two Jet Master colts and one by Silvano we’ll be selling as an agent. They are horses for the discerning buyer. All three have half-brothers who have won feature races overseas.”
Master Innings (Lot 343) is by Jet Master from Mamushka, the dam of exported sprinter Tiza, a dual Group 3 winner in France. Prince Of Wings (Lot 585), is a half-brother by Jet Master to Widar, a Listed winner in Germany, and our own What A Question, winner of the Grade 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes and the Grade 3 Byerley Turk.
Lot 402 is Crown If Gold (Silvano), whose half-brother Silver Mist needs no introduction following his success at the 2009 Dubai Racing Carnival.
Another Ceres breeder is Eugene Freeman of Boland Stud, who raves about a Jallad colt he named O Jallad (Lot 7) because this one bears a close resemblance to O’Caesour, the Grade 1 winning sprinter. “O Jallad is strong and well-balanced. He is the first yearling thrown by the mare Al Damirji after O’Caesour that actually looks like him,’’ Freeman tells.
She’s A Bull (Lot 209) is by Captain Al from Goldante. “Her name tells her story,’’ says Freeman. “She’s big, strong and imposing and we like her a lot!”
